Challenge #2: Trail Tales: Share the History of Your Favorite Hike
From dams and floods to personal turning points — what stories do your trails hold? Join the challenge and tell us yours.
This week, Rapid Lightning Creek Trail led me on a journey through history. I learned about a catastrophic flood and the impact (both positive and negative) of building a dam to prevent such disasters in the future.
Your challenge: Tell me the history of one of your favorite trails. It can cover the land, the people, nearby waterways, or a bit of personal history. Did you get engaged on a trail? Did you break up with your first boyfriend after getting lost on a hike? Maybe you discovered an old homestead, learned about Indigenous connections to the area, or uncovered how a trail was built by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) crews decades ago.
I want to know the good, the bad, and the surprising - the stories that make a trail more than just dirt under your boots. Share in the comments below (or submit a longer piece via the Readers’ Hike form if you’d like to be featured). Whether it’s a local favorite here in Northern Idaho or a trail from your travels, your stories help us all see the land we walk in new ways.
I can’t wait to see (and maybe feature!) your comments in an upcoming post.
Happy Hiking!
Jen C.
